Dairy Industry “The Complete Solution”

Central California – A new high capacity Dairy was being started in central California. The dairy would milk 10,000 cows when it reached its full capacities. The need for a complete solution to all the water needs was a critical element in the overall plan.

Mitchell Lewis & Staver in cooperation with their partner contractor was able to supply a variety of pumps for several different pumping applications. The need to provide varying flows and pressures within the Dairy in an efficient cost competitive manner was critical to the overall success of the project .MLS provided a different pump for several different applications. First the project required two deep well turbines to provide the primary and backup sources of water. Second two close coupled turbines were mounted in two cisterns to provide water for three different applications. The first need was to provide drinking water for as many as 10,000 cows. Second was to provide all of the dairy internal processes with water. The refrigeration units for the milk and the misting units to cool the cattle during the long California summer heat. And finally water for wash down and cleaning within the milking parlors. In addition, the need for pumps on the waste side of the dairy required supplying two submersible pumps within the waste lagoon and a unique vertically float mounted Centrifugal 10” discharge pump for pumping to a near by field.

MLS was able to provide the complete solution for each of these needs. The total system was operated with a Mitchell Lewis & Staver designed Variable Frequency Drive Package which allowed the system to vary flow and pressure depending on the various demands at any given time.  The dairyman was able to save a great deal of money by varying the electrical consumption to match the demand. The drive also allowed the system to alternate between pumps thus allowing even wear on the different units.

The contractor was able to use MLS as his sole source from early in the design process through product acquisition, final delivery and startup.
